On Saturday, Antigo High School's Claire Musolff competed among the best gymnasts in the state at the 50th WIAA Gymnastics State Championship Meet at Wisconsin Rapids High School.

Musolff punched her ticket to the state meet last weekend by finishing in the top five at sectionals in both the vault and floor exercise competitions.

Competing individually without any teammates by her side, the sophomore was able to perform two solid routines to end her season with the highest state finish thus far in her high school career.

“Claire has so much to be proud of,” commented coach Julie Langseth on her gymnast's performance.  “She performed her best vault of the season at the state meet, under the pressure and with the best competition in the state.”

Musolff began the day on vault, and despite a mix-up and late switch of equipment just before competing, she was able to compose herself and post one of her highest scores of the year.  Her handspring full-twisting vault earned her a score of 8.733, tying her for 16th place overall and topping her 19th place finish from a year ago.

“Vault was pretty eventful during warmups, but in the end, I feel like I competed well and earned one of my highest scores of the season,” Musolff said.

Musolff rotated through the competition with the other gymnasts who qualified from Antigo's sectional, and she was thankful to have the support and encouragement from her familiar competitors.

“My group was so much fun to be with and we all sort of felt like a team,” added the Antigo gymnast.  “I also enjoy my floor routine so much and doing it in front of all the people down there was absolutely amazing.”

Claire performed a solid routine on floor and was able to earn a score of 8.367, which put her in 25th place overall on that event.

“State is just such a fun experience and it was so exciting to be going for two events this year, and I am just so proud to have made it this year and last,” Musolff added.  “I'm looking forward to improving more for next year and hoping to qualify my last two years as well.”

The highest finisher from the Antigo sectional was Washburn's Laky Sonday who finished sixth on vault with a score of 9.233.  Medford's Brooklyn Bilz also had a strong performance, as the highest all-around finisher from the day with a combined score of 34.234 in 16th place overall.

Individually, Whitefish Bay's Addie Gallun finished the competition with three titles, taking home the gold on vault with a 9.533, uneven bars with a 9.383, and the all-around competition, totaling 37.550.

In Division I, reigning champion Gracie Holland of Marshfield finished second in the all-around behind Menominee Falls' Miranda Knabe.  Holland was still able to earn an individual title, winning vault with a score of 9.583.
