Robins defeat Lakeland in WIAA regional, earn shot at Hortonville
space
An old sports cliche claims that it's hard to beat the same team three times in one season.

The Antigo boys basketball team added a piece of evidence to that adage Tuesday night, exacting revenge on the Lakeland Thunderbirds in the WIAA regional quarterfinals with a thrilling 61-59 victory.

Lakeland had beaten the Red Robins twice during the regular season, earning the home court advantage for the eight versus nine seed playoff matchup. Beyond those two results, Tuesday's game looked like a straight coin flip contest, both teams coming in with identical 8-14 overall records, and having finished tied in the Great Northern Conference at 4-8.

The game quickly evolved into that evenly matched battle. Antigo came out strong in the hostile environment, jumping out to a brief early lead. The Lakeland defense turned the tide and forced the Robins into a tough stretch, with the Thunderbirds putting on a double-digit run midway through the first half.

Facing such a withering stretch on the road, a weak-minded team might have folded. Not so for coach Ivan Flannery's squad, and the Robins fought back to cut the Lakeland lead to 27-23 at half.

“We started the game fast, built a good lead, then went flat for about seven minutes and got away from playing our brand of basketball,” Flannery recalled. “But then we closed that gap before halftime.”

Scoring picked up for both teams after the break, and the usual suspects provided big moments when the Robins needed them most. Senior captains Tanner Resch, Nevin Cornelius, and Alec Hotchkiss led the charge, with big-time support from underclassmen Eli Fleischman and Elliot Orgeman.

Antigo seized the lead as the game entered the homestretch, but sealing the deal was not easy. A handful of missed free throws allowed Lakeland to hang in the game until the final moments. Down just two, Thunderbird guard Nolan St. Germaine made a coast-to-coast dash with five seconds to play, but his buzzer shot did not fall and the Robins claimed the playoff win.

Flannery summed up the victory as “satisfying.”

“In the second half, our senior leadership was there, Nevin, Tanner and Alec were big,” the coach said. “Then we got key contributions from Eli and Elliot, they made some key shots. Several other guys off the bench played key roles in our defensive rotations, really helped us lock down in the second half. That was so important, to be able to call on them, especially in the playoffs when its win or go home.

“This was a total team win, one that we had to grind out the whole game, I was very proud of the way the guys played.”

That three-pronged senior captain attack of Resch, Hotchkiss and Cornelius combined for 43 Red Robin points. Fleischman added eight, Orgeman six, and Logan Thomae scored four.

Alex Fortier led Lakeland with 15 points, Michael Ouimette added 13, and Brayden Wiczek scored 11.

The quarterfinal victory earns Antigo, now 9-14 overall, a series challenge and a huge opportunity to write a new chapter in the storied program history. The Red Robins will venture into the domain of the number one regional seed Hortonville Polar Bears on Friday.

Hortonville enters the game with a 17-5 record. The Polar Bears finished third in the very tough Fox Valley Association at 13-5.

“We play Hortonville on Friday, we go in there as an underdog, and we're excited for it,” Flannery concluded.

Tipoff at Hortonville Friday night is slated for 7 p.m. The team that emerges victorious from that game will face the winner of Shawano and New London in the regional final on Saturday night.
