space
Following a disappointing first round Great Northern Conference Tournament loss to Waupaca a week ago, the Antigo Red Robins hockey team bounced back with a vengeance Tuesday night, whipping the Tomahawk Hatchets 12-0.

The Robins scored early and often in the consolation round matchup, putting up eight goals in the first period and cruised from there, setting up a battle for fifth place with Medford this Saturday in the Eagle River dome.

Medford shut out Rhinelander in the other consolation round game Tuesday, 2-0.

“I thought the boys played well all night,” head coach Matt Borneman said. “The team had a lot of fun playing with a full bench, we suited all available players and they all saw ice time, it was great to see their excitement.”

The eight-goal first period was highlighted by a natural hat trick from sophomore Joe Volpentesta. All three scores were unassisted, coming at the 1:06, 14:37 and 14:43 marks.

The third goal came shortly after the center ice faceoff, just six seconds after his second tally.

Amazingly, the final two goals were also both came shorthanded with a Robins' skater in the penalty box.

“It was great to see Joe get rewarded for his hard work,” Borneman said. “All the guys saw some quality looks which was great to see.”

Five other skaters found the back of the net for Antigo in the first, including Garrett Husnick, Carter Michalik, Chris Krueger, Isaac Wickersheim and Reese Myre.

Starting Tomahawk goaltender Caidyn Senoraske lasted just the first period, recording nine saves. He was replaced by senior Chris Callahan, who ended his night with 22 saves, 11 each in the second and third periods.

The Robins found the back of the net twice in both frames, with Dylan Lewis and Michalik scoring in the second period, and senior Kaleb Jaje scoring his first career varsity goal in the third, along with another tally from Krueger.

The game also saw the very welcomed return of freshman defenseman Landon Nelson, back from a long lay-off due to injury. The freshman could help shore up the Robins' defensive rotation with the postseason approaching.

“We are very happy to have four defenseman again,” Borneman noted. “It should be a huge benefit to our team.”

Volpentesta added an assist for a four-point game, Krueger, Wickersheim and Michalik all totaled three-point nights as well, as did defenseman Joe Bartletti. Bartletti assisted on three goals for a playmaker.

Lewis and Myre had assists for totals of two points and Tyler Schroepfer added an assist as well.

Brody Bunnell made 11 saves in goals for the Robins. He gave way to Aaron Converse in the third, who stopped all three Tomahawk shots he faced.

Antigo improved to 8-14-1 on the season and 4-5 in the Great Northern Conference with its second win over the Hatchets this season. Tomahawk dropped to 2-18, 0-9 in the GNC.

The Robins will now have three days of practice to prepare for what should be a tough game with Medford Saturday in Eagle River.

Antigo knocked off the Raiders 2-1 earlier this season.

“We are excited to play another game and try to keep improving for the playoffs,” Borneman added.

Saturday's game is an 11:45 a.m. start, while the Robins will open the WIAA Division Two playoffs on Thurs., Feb. 20 at Mosinee.
