Fillies 17U team opens with runner-up finish in Shawano

The Antigo Fillies 17U softball team opened their season at the Shawano Tournament Saturday, and finished the weekend with a 3-1 record, good for second place overall.

D.C. DEMONS

The Fillies defeated the D.C. Demons 12-2 in its first contest.

The Fillies struck right off the bat as Alonna Weix and Kiarra Moravec reached on errors. Ellie Krause drew a walk and Ellie Preboski followed with a bases-clearing triple for a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, Callie Hubatch drew a walk, Weix single and Moravec walked, followed by back-to-back doubles by Krause and Preboski for a 7-0 lead.

Antigo added one run in the third inning before scoring four more times in the fifth. Two walks, an error, singles from Weix and Moravec and Preboski's third double of the game finished the Fillies' scoring.

Preboski led the offensive attack with a big four-for-four game, including three doubles and a triple. Weix ripped three hits, Quinlan McCarthy, Erica Manka and Abbi Noskowiak all added hits to the cause.

Noskowiak and Moravec combined on the mound for the win, allowing just two runs on two hits, with nine strikeouts and a lone walk.

NEENAH

Game two for the Fillies was a 10-2 win over Neenah.

Antigo struck first in the opening inning, as Weix reached on an error, advanced to third on a steal and scored on a Moravec sacrifice fly. Preboski followed with a single and came home on back-to-back hits from Natalie Dewey and McCarthy.

The Fillies added a pair of runs in the second inning and one in third, before breaking things open with five runs in the fifth.

The inning included a Dewey single, three walks, a Manka double, Weix single and Moravec double.

Noskowiak and Moravec both pitched well again, allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out one and walking four.

NEENAH/SEMIFINAL

Next up was a rematch with Neenah, who came through its bracket with a trip to the championship game on the line.

Neenah was much tougher this time around, but it was the Fillies who scored a 9-2 win.

Antigo manufactured two runs in the second on a pair of walks, sacrifice bunt and two groundouts.

The third inning saw Moravec single, followed by back-to-back doubles from Krause and Preboski for a 4-0 lead.

After adding a run in the fourth, Paige Peterson singled with straight doubles ensuing, courtesy of Weix, Moravec and Preboski, with McCarthy adding a single.

Moravec and Preboski both went three-for-four in the win, while Callie Hubatch added a hit.

Noskowiak and Moravec again combined for the win, allowing seven runs on five hits, with a strikeout and five base-on-balls issued.

SHAWANO/

CHAMPIONSHIP

The Fillies faced off with the host team, Shawano in the title game and lost a hard-fought 5-4 contest.

Antigo was able to strike first in the game as Weix doubled and was joined on the base paths by Moravec who singled. Preboski was next up and blasted a two-run triple to put the Fillies in front.

The second inning saw the Fillies add a run on a Noskowiak walk, sacrifice bunt by Hubatch and a sac fly from Peterson.

The Hawks answered back with two in the bottom of the frame and another three runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish.

The Fillies got within a run in the seventh as Weix singled, was moved over via a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Krause fly ball.

Krause, Weix and Preboski all had two hits to lead the Fillies at the plate. Moravec and Manka all had one base knock.

Noskowiak and Moravec took the loss on the mound.
