The long Memorial Day holiday arrives in just a few hours, with a very big schedule of events.

Check today's front page for a look at the wide array of Memorial Day observances across the region. A look at other events, taken from the Journal's advertising columns, follows:

MUSIC IN THE PARK

Langlade County's summer Music in the Park series, which has grown from an occasional night of entertainment to a full-fledgedâ€and very fullâ€schedule, opens Wednesday in Elcho.

The Elcho School Band will perform in the Elcho Community Pavilion. Food will be served by the Elcho Explorers 4-H Club.

Music returns to the City Park bandstand on Elcho on Monday, June 3 when the Antigo High School Jazz Band kicks off the summer season with hot dogs, pies and custard served by high school music faculty. The concert is sponsored by Brickners of Antigo.

All concerts start at 6:30 p.m. unless otherwise indicated. Food is served at 5:30 p.m.

In case of rain, Antigo concerts are moved to the Heinzen Pavilion at Peaceful Valley Park and White Lake's are relocated to the Lake Pavilion. Elcho's venue allows concerts rain-or-shine.

BILL STAINES

Nationally acclaimed folk singer and songwriter Bill Staines will return to Antigo Friday, May 31 for a house concert at The Bula Barn, W11957 Highland Rd., Antigo. The concert will start at 7:30 p.m.

A cover charge of $15 per person will be collected at the door. An array of Staines' album and books will be available for sale at the house concert.

The Antigo Community Theatre is sponsoring the concert.

HISTORY, THE ARTS

Antigo Visual Arts is celebrating “Summer in the Northwoods,” with an exhibit now on display in the AVA art gallery in the Langlade County Historical Society Museum. The show is available for viewing during regular museum hours, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. It will hang until AVA's fall show opens Sept. 14.

The Langlade County Historical Society Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The complex includes the Carnegie library building, Deleglise Cabin and 440 locomotive and caboose. It is located at 404 Superior St. The Society is in the midst of a major fundraising campaign to install an elevator and make other necessary and aesthetic improvements. Stop by the museum to pick up a brochure.

The White Lake Area Historical Society operates the Depot Museum and Historical Center in White Lake. Hours are Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Society will also host a Lumberkjack Breakfast on Saturday, June 1, 7 to 11 a.m. at the White Lake Community Center. Members will be serving flapjacks, pork links and more.

The Old Corner School at Neva Corners offers a treasure trove of civic lessons, history, community more and early life in Langlade County. It is open from noon to 4 p.m. on holiday weekends starting this weekend through Monday; July 4-7; and Aug. 31-Sept. 1. It is also available by appointment. Call Peg Aulik at 715 623-4212.

BAZAARS, SALES

Zurko's annual “Maximums” Flea Market is at the Langlade County Fairgrounds today until 4 p.m. It moves to the Shawano County Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

McDougal's Farm LLC, W10835 Bluebell Rd., is open today through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's got a bit of everything, including bedding flowers and baskets, cooking and tea herbs, garden vegetables and more. Visit mcdougalsfarm.com for directions and details.

Come and grow at Frisch Greenhouse, now open for the planting season. Hours are Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sundays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The greenhouse will be open on Memorial Day, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

A multi-family yard sale is taking place today and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Irish residence, a quarter-mile west of Kempster at W10495 County Rd. J. It's a three-family sale and everything must go.

Mole Lake Casino will host a spring craft and vendor show on Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stay around for music. Ask Your Mother will be playing Saturday and Sunday in 8 p.m. free shows.

A “Something for Everyone Sale,” a fund-raiser for the Polar Recreation Ballpark, is being held May 30 through June 2 at the park. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Come and see what's available for new household products. Proceeds will be used to purchase playground equipment.

Antigo Garden Club plans its annual plant sale on Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, in the Heinzen Pavilion at Peaceful Valley Park.

The Greater Mattoon Area Historical Society is collecting unwanted firearms and other outdoor equipment as a fund-raiser toward creating the new museum. Donated items will be sold to collectors or at auction, with items of historical value kept as artifacts. DINING

Luigi's Pizza & Pasta on Antigo's north side is offering delicious food at great prices. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays; and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Closed Monday.

Country Kitchen thanks veterans and active military personnel for their service. Dine in on Memorial Day and receive a free country scramble breakfast with beverage purchase. Participants just need to show a military ID.

SPORTS

The trap range operated by Phlox Sportsman's Club will be open for practice on Wednesday. A 10-week league will begin on Monday, June 3 and be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. New shooters are welcome. Call 715 489-3710 with questions.

The Antigo Polar Bears continue the 2019 BABA schedule, taking on Eland in Eland at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Games continue on most Sundays through Aug. 4.

Planning is underway for summer football. Strength and conditioning class starts on June 10 and a free youth football camp will be held June 11 through 13. There will be a mini-camp for grades nine through 12 on July 15-18. A mandatory parent/guardian and athlete fall sports meeting will be held on July 31 starting with online registration at 4:30 p.m. First day of practice is Aug. 6.
