Antigo Area Weekend Activities

A very quick prom season arrived in Langlade County this weekend, with the springtime dances taking place Saturday night at all three county high schools.

The weekend also brings the annual community concert, and golfing at Bass Lake. The week ahead also includes the chamber of commerce business expo and ladies night out at the Elks Club.

A look at events, taken from the Journal's advertising columns, follows:

LIVELY ARTS

The lively arts are heating up in Antigo.

On Sunday, Antigo Area Community Band and Of Chorus! will join for the annual spring concert. It will begin at 4 p.m. in the Volm Theater at Antigo High School. A freewill offering will be accepted and refreshments served at intermission. There will also be raffle prizes.

The Antigo Music Association will present the Jersey Tenors on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Volm Theater at the high school. Admission is by music association membership.

Other upcoming events include the AHS band concert On May 5; AHS choir on May 17; Middle School choir on May 20; and Bill Staines concert on May 31.

In addition, Antigo Visual Artists “Starved for Spring” exhibit continues through May 16 in the gallery located at the Langlade County Historical Society Museum.

PROMS

This weekend also startsand concludesthe high school prom season. Antigo, Elcho and White Lake all plan Saturday night dances.

Antigo will have “A Walk Through Central Park” in the Sheldon Fieldhouse from 7 to 11 p.m. Grand march is at 7:30 p.m. Spectator admission is $3 with proceeds donated to the Weekend Backpack program.

Elcho plans “Midnight in Paris” from 7 to 11 p.m. with grand march at 8 p.m.

White Lake's small gym will be transformed into an “Enchanted Forest,” with the dance from 8 to 11 p.m. and grand march at 9 p.m. Spectator admission is $5.

GOLFING

Bass Lake Golf Course is now open for the 2019 season. Reserve a tee time at 715 623-6196.

The 19th Hole Bar and Grill is also open. Make plans to visit for the Mother's Day brunch on May 12, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

CRUNCH OUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS

Taco John's want to “Crunch Out Cystic Fibrosis.” On Saturday, the restaurant will host its annual fund-raiser for Great Strides Walk-Team Reid.

Between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., 15 percent of all sales in the Antigo and Rhinelander stores will go to help Team Reid meet its Great Strides Walk fund-raising goal. The restaurants are also offering $1 pinups all month.

The team is named after Reid Dwyer, 9 1/2-year-old nephew of Taco John's owners Julie and Herman Basuki.

Great Strides is a fun, family-friendly event that raises awareness and support for people with CF and their families. Team Reid will be walking Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. , starting and ending at the Eagles Club in Fond du Lac. Lunch, prize raffles, and entertainment will follow.

LADIES NIGHT OUT

Enjoy Ladies Night Out on Thursday at the Antigo Elks Club.

Social hour will be from 5 to 7 p.m. At 7 p.m. enjoy a stuffed Cornish hen dinner, complete with asparagus, twice-baked potatoes, salad and dessert.

And in a nod to the upcoming Kentucky Derby, ladies are invited to wear their hats. The best one will win a free meal.

Reservations are due Monday. Stop in and sign up or call 715 623-3034.

MOVIES

Now showing at the Palace Twin Theater are “Avengers 3D,” rated PG-13 along with Shazam, rated PG-13, and Us, rated R.

The Antigo/Langlade County Chamber of Commerce will host its first annual Business Expo on Tuesday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the multi-purpose building at the Langlade County Fairgrounds.

The goal of the Expo is to provide exhibitors and attendees an opportunity to network, collaborate, learn about, and promote area businesses. There will be free samples, demonstrations and free admission.

AUCTIONS, SALES

The Greater Mattoon Area Historical Society is collecting unwanted firearms and other outdoor equipment as a fund-raiser toward creating the new museum. Donated items will be sold to collectors or at auction, with items of historical value kept as artifacts. Check the website at www.mattoonhistory.com or call 715 623-4513 or 715 489-3647 for more information.

OTHER EVENTS

The Langlade County Historical Society Museum is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The complex includes the Carnegie library building, Deleglise Cabin and 440 locomotive and caboose. It is located at 404 Superior St. The Society is in the midst of a major fundraising campaign to install an elevator and make other necessary and aesthetic improvements. Stop by the museum to pick up a brochure.

The White Lake Area Historical Society operates the Depot Museum and Historical Center in White Lake. Hours are Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
