Antigo girls fall at West, a hectic January schedule awaits
space
When you are gearing up for a rematch with one of the top teams in the area, nine days of preparation sounds like a good amount.

The flip side is, perhaps thats just too much time away from game action. In either case, the Antigo girls varsity basketball team found tough sledding at Wausau West Thursday, falling to the Warriors for the second time this season by a 84-40 score.

The Red Robins had few answers for West's strong inside game, as the Warriors shot 62 percent on field goals, 27 for 43, and earned 28 trips to the free throw line, making 22.

“They penetrated, and our second tier defense broke down,” coach Dale Lenzner said. “That puts a lot of pressure on the one remaining defender thats set, and you wind up with two on one situations underneath the basket.”

Antigo also ran into problems with the Warriors intense defensive pressure, coughing up 26 turnovers.

“Their press was outstanding,” Lenzner explained. “They are just a very good team, in a different league. They took us out of sync and we threw the ball away way too many times.”

There were bright spots to be found for Antigo, in particular the continued emergence of young players capable of making big contributions in a reserve role, in particular Allona Weix, who led the Robins with 16 points.

“Allona gave us a phenomenal shooting showcase off the bench,” Lenzner said. “Four three pointers, 100 percent from the free throw line, she is just a baller. She plays great defense and has great vision on the court.”

The coach also highlighted the performances of Riley McCann and Brinna Mauk, who scored seven points each. Laynie Weix chipped in four points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Tess Hauer was the top scorer in a balanced Warriors offense with 18 points. Maddie Schires and Anna Cunningham scored 16 each. Kadie Deaton had nine points, six rebounds, six assists, and five steals.

The loss drops the lady Robins to 2-6 on the season, however they retain a winning conference record at 2-1.

The team now takes a lengthy holiday break to gear up for an action-packed January. After only three December games, Antigo has ten on the schedule for the first month of 2019. Five of the first six January games will be on home court, starting with Mosinee on Jan. 3.

Lenzner says his squad is going to use the time off to get healthy, and get better.

“We will practice all of our fundamentals, and continue doing what we do,” he said. “Its going to be a busy January, and this gives us an opportunity to fix all our illnesses and get back into it.”
