Chili cooks on the street today brewing up a treat for 5:30 p.m.
space
The meat and peppers were simmering up and down Fifth Avenue this morning as chili chefs concocted their finestâ€maybeâ€for today's big cookoff.

There were 39 entries in the traditional and roughneck varieties in the 21st annual event, the kickoff to Christmas in Antigo.

Many of the booths were decoratedâ€or in the process of being dressedâ€in chili and Christmas themes, with the Thrivent-Antigo Daily Journal booth even harboring a Grinch. But others took a different flair, including Neve's Furniture and Floors-to-Go, which chose a Hawaiian motif.

Down the block, at Fifth and Clermont, members of the Antigo Optimist Club were fueling up the cheese curd wagon, with serving starting around lunchtime and the ovens were being prepared for freshly-based cookies using dough provided by Antigo Bakery.

The cheese curds and cookies can be enjoyed starting this afternoon, but chili sampling has to wait until 5:30 p.m., shortly before the 6:30 p.m. parade welcoming Santa to town.

Entries in today's cookoff include:

A to B Auto Sales, Amron, Antigo Aftermath, Antigo Daily Journal, Antigo Firefighters.

Antigo Lions, Antigo Party Rentals, Antigo Seventh Day Adventist Church, Baginski Enterprises, Chase Chili Cookers.

Christmas Ho Ho Ho's, CoVantage Credit Union, Culver's of Antigo, Ed and Brian's, Fantastic Chili Queens.

Gas House Gang, Hydratight 1, Hydratight 2, Inkredible Mess, Johnson Electric Coil.
