Tom Schofield is new Antigo athletic director
Antigo High School will have a new Athletic Director beginning with the 2018-19 school year.
Current AHS Head Football Coach Tom Schofield has accepted the position, after Matt Meronk stepped down as AD after six years. Meronk will remain with the district, as he has taken on a new position as assistant eight and ninth grade principal at AHS.
Schofield will remain on as Head Football Coach, a position he took over in 2015, taking a 4-6 team to three straight Great Northern Conference championships, including a 10-2 record and deep playoff run this past season.
Tom is the grandson of legendary Antigo coach Gordon Schofield, who won three state titles during his time at the helm, and played college football at Eastern Illinois where he provided the punting duties.
He has also worked as a physical education teacher in the district, but will now take on the challenge of overseeing all of Antigos athletic operations.
Im very excited for the opportunity to continue a strong tradition of Red Robins athletics and activities, Schofield said. I hope to ensure the highest quality programs for all students to participate in at Antigo.
The outgoing Athletic Director is confident Schofield is the right man for the job.
Tom brings 10 years of teaching experience and has coached multiple teams at multiple levels in Antigo, Meronk noted. He carries a high level of enthusiasm and energy which will translate well in his new position, he is respected by fellow staff and coaches, is patient and approachable, and his great work ethic will translate well and help guide our athletics to continued success.
While Meronk may be moving on, there is no doubt he will continued to be involved in athletics in some form.
I cant completely get away from it, its in my blood, Meronk added. This was an extremely tough decision, every person I have worked with in my position has been amazing and I cant thank them enough, I know first hand how athletics and activities can shape students lives and make a lasting impact.
