Welcome summer!

The northwoods will unofficially welcome that most elusive of seasons over the long Memorial Day holiday, with cookouts, graduations, boat rides, and much more covering the weekend.

But residents will also make time on Monday to salute those who gave their lives in defense of the country and parades and observances across the region.

Memorial Day observances across the region are printed on today’s front page. A look ahead at other events, taken from the Antigo Daily Journal’s advertising columns, follows:

GRADUATIONS

It’s a busy high school graduation weekend across the northwoods, with ceremonies tonight at 7 p.m. at Bowler and 7:30 p.m. at Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

They will continue at 1 p.m. Saturday at both Elcho and White Lake and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Antigo in a new location, Schofield Stadium.

On Sunday night, AHS seniors are invited to the graduation lock-in, running from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. at North Star Lanes. There will be free food, prizes, music, bowling, pool and Texas Hold ’em.

BIKE BLESSING

Father Charlie is back for the Bike and Classic Car Blessing on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Rick’s 45 Roadhouse.

MUSIC IN THE PARK

It’s time to enjoy Music in the Park.

Music kicked off on Wednesday at the Elcho Community Pavilion but the series waits until Monday, June 4 at Antigo’s City Park bandstand, when the high school jazz band will take the stage at 6:30 p.m.

The show is sponsored by Brickners of Antigo and Dr. Mark Aldrich. Antigo music faculty will serve hot dog plates, pie and custard starting at 5:30 p.m.

On Wednesday, June 6 music returns to Elcho with the MLC Blues Band at 6:30 p.m. Food will be sponsored by the Girls Scouts.

Music returns to Antigo on Thursday, June 7 with the Spotlight Polka Band at 6:30 p.m. The show is sponsored by Evergreen Terrace. Brats and hamburger plates will be served by Langlade County Crime Stoppers and pie and custard by Calvary Lutheran Church.

LANGLADE FUND-RAISER

Join the fun at the sixth annual town of Langlade Fire & Rescue fund-raiser Sunday, 3 to 9 p.m. at Northwoods Inn in Pickerel.

There will be live music, food, drinks, raffles and a silent auction.

DINING

Check out the Memorial weekend specials at Bass Lake Golf Course. Tonight, try the buffet featuring broiled or baked fish, deep fried shrimp, barbecued ribs, potatoes and salad bar. The restaurant is closed Saturday for graduation parties. On Sunday, Chef Charlie specials will include shrimp bellworth, chicken marsala, blackened rib eye, shrimp carbonara, chicken parmesan and chicken francaise.

ART SHOW

Antigo Visual Artists is now showing Summer in the Northwoods in the gallery located in the Langlade County Historical Society Museum. It remains on display in the AVA gallery through Sept. 6.

MOVIES

Now playing at The Palace Twin Theater are Solo: A Star Wars Story, rated PG-13, and Deadpool 2,’ rated R.

AUCTIONS, SALES

The Antigo Garden Club will hold a plant sale on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Heinzen Pavilion in Peaceful Valley Park. There will also be a raffle.

Peace Lutheran Church plans the Another Man’s Treasures auction on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. Items of all sorts—household, yard, home and sporting goods—will be on the block.

The Maximus flea market closes at 4 p.m. today at the Langlade County Fairgrounds. It will be held at the Shawano County Fairgrounds on Saturday and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $2.

McDougal’s Farm LLC. will have its unique greenhouse open today through Monday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Details at mcdougalfarm.com.

Frisch Greenhouses is open for the planting season. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Langlade County Historical Society is accepting donated items for its rummage sale slated Saturday, June 9. They may be dropped off during regular business hours by June 2. No clothing or large appliances please.

AC Fireworks in Birnamwood is holding is grand reopening for the season. There are Memorial weekend specials through Monday.

It’s the last weekend to purchase bareroot trees at Grandciew Orchard. Get 20 percent of apricot trees while supplies last. Potted trees and plants will be available through June 9.

FOOTBALL

Baseball season is just getting underway but summer football is just around the corner. Upcoming events and dates include:

—Summer school strength and conditioning class, June 11 to 25.

—Football developmental youth camp, June 5 and 6.

—High school football mini camp, July 16 to 19.

—and Antigo captain lead football 7 on 7, every Monday in June and July.

Sign up now for Thursday evening volleyball leagues. Play starts on May 31. Call Kools Klubb at 715 623-6302 for details.

A Junior Lady Red Robins Basketball Camp for girls in grades five through eight will take place June 5, 6 and 7,8 a.m. to noon, at the Middle School. Register the first day from 8 to 8:30 a.m. It is sponsored by the Antigo High School girls basketball coach. Head coach will be Dale Lenzner with Bruce Brown and Carla Wissbroecker as assistants.

The Phlox Sportsman’s Club trap range will be open for practice on Wednesday. The 10-week league will begin on Monday, June 4 and run every Monday and Wednesday at 6 p.m.

OTHER EVENTS

The Langlade County Historical Society Museum is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The complex includes the Carnegie library building, Deleglise Cabin and 440 locomotive and caboose. It is located at 404 Superior St.

The White Lake Area Historical Society operates the Depot Museum and Historical Center in White Lake. Summer hours are Wednesdays and Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Old Corner School at Neva Corners offers a treasure trove of civic lessons, history, community lore and early life in Langlade County. It is open holiday weekends, May 26-28, July 1, 4 and 7 and Sept. 1 through 3, noon to 4 p.m. Visits are also available by appointment. Call Peg Aulik at 715 623-4212.
