Fast start, good pitching key softball 5-3 playoff win
space
The Antigo Red Robins softball team has advanced in the WIAA division two playoffs, as it upended Medford in a regional semifinal on the road Tuesday, 5-3.

We jumped out to an early lead and added a few more runs here and there to secure the win, Head Coach Sandi Robrecht said. Kendall Smith threw really well and kept Medford’s bats quiet.

Smith pitched all seven innings for the win. Only two of Medford’s three runs were earned, while she allowed just four hits, walked five and struck out four.

Antigo got on the board in the top of the first inning with two runs.

Laynie Weix walked with one out, and Brettingen drove her in with a base hit. Smith was next up and singled, moving Brettingen into scoring position for Lizzy West, who delivered another RBI single.

Following a scoreless second, the Robins tacked on two more runs in the third.

Brettingen and Smith were the catalysts, with both drawing a walk to begin the inning. After West was retired, Allison Peters was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Two batters later, Taylor Arrowood came through with a clutch two-out single, scoring both Brettingen and Smith for a 4-0 lead.

The rally chased Medford starter Haylee Clausnitzer from the game. She was charged with four runs in her two plus innings of work and took the loss.

Antigo tacked on another run in the sixth. Arrowood singled, moved over on an error, and scored on a double from Lizzy Burkhart.

All three of Medford’s runs came in the bottom of the seventh. An error allowed the leadoff runner to reach, but Smith followed with a strikeout of Krista Golhardt. Mac Fries was next up for the Raiders and singled, setting the stage for Clausnitzer.

The Medford three hitter blasted a three-run homer to get her team within two runs.

The rally would end short however, as Smith retired the next two batters for the win.

Brettingen led the Robins with a two-for-three game.

Clausnitzer and Fries led the Raiders with two hits each, their only of the game.

Antigo improves to 9-8 on the season, while Medford’s season ends with a record of 9-15. The teams split their prior meetings this season, but the rubber match, and most important one goes to the Robins.

Fifth-seeded Antigo advances to Friday’s regional final, where it will meet the winner of tonight’s game betwen top-seeded Mosinee and nine-seed Clintonville.

We are playing some good softball right now, Robrecht added. We are excited to play again.
