Robins off to 2-0 start after crushing LaFollette 12-1
The Antigo Red Robins baseball team took care of business on Wednesday, crushing a depleted Madison LaFollette team on the road 12-1 in five innings, and moved to 2-0 on the season in the process.
It was a nice win, Head Coach Scott Farmer said. LaFollette didnt have much with four guys suspended, but anytime we can get out and play this time of year is a plus.
Antigo did all its damage in the second and third innings, plating six runs in each frame.
The second inning saw the Robins send 10 batters to the plate, with two runs scoring on wild pitches as LaFollette starter Matt Yentzel struggled with his early season control.
Run scoring hits came courtesy of Matt Winter, who drove in two with a double, Brady Tatro, who followed Winter with an RBI single, and Held, whose double plated Tatro for a 6-1 Antigo lead.
Wade Farmer led off the Antigo half of the third inning with a single, and Brady Renfro proceeded to blast a two-run homer, putting the Robins in command at 8-1.
Cody Urban followed up Renfros blast with a double and came home on Eric Langseths RBI base knock to make it a 9-1 game.
Two more runs would come home on wild pitches by Yentzel and Farmer drove in what would be the Robins final run with a two out single. In all, 11 Red Robin batters came to the plate in the third.
Tatro and Farmer led Antigo with two hits each, part of an 11 hit showing. Despite a total of zero outside practices, the Robins have put up a total of 24 hits in their first two outings, and have struck out just once.
Offensively we looked good again, Farmer noted. Each guy put some good swings on the ball, Renfro put a nice charge into his home run in the third.
Hitting was not the only story, as Antigo pitching walked just one batter and allowed only three hits through five innings of work.
Pitching was very good today, Farmer added. One walk, making them put it in play was fantastic.
A.J. Kirsch started on the mound and went three innings to claim the win, striking out five. Winter and Farmer each threw scoreless innings as the game ended on the 10-run rule after five innings.
Madison LaFollettes lone run came in the first inning, courtesy of a Dominic Solberg single, in what was the season opener for the Lancers, a member of the Big Eight Conference.
We got an opportunity to get a look at a lot of different things, Farmer said. It allowed us to rest some guys for Thursdays doubleheader and see some other guys on the mound.
The Robins look to continue their season opening win streak with todays twin bill in Wisconsin Rapids. Game one is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
