Bowler man is now charged in Mattoon robbery
Police have identified the man allegedly involved in the armed robbery of a Mattoon gas station on March 6.
According to the Shawano Leader, Jay J. Hill, 34, of Bowler, is now charged with felony counts of armed robbery, possession of methamphetamine, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Additional counts include possession of THC and bail jumping.
Hill is alleged to have robbed Donnas Village Pump on Fourth Street in Mattoon at gunpoint, leaving with approximately $1,500 and two cartons of cigarettes.
Authorities say he entered the station at 8:30 p.m., wearing a ski mask, and demanded money from both the cash register and safe.
The clerk complied, and Hill placed the money drawer and a cash box into a duffel bag and left.
A description of his vehicle was obtained and Rothschild police pulled Hill over in Marathon County March 14 and took him into custody.
The cash drawer and clothing matching what the suspect was wearing was found in the vehicle. A shotgun and pipe containing meth residue was also located.
The cash box from the Village Pump was allegedly found in Hills apartment after authorities executed a later search warrant.
The armed robbery charge alone carries a maximum penalty of 40 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.
