Rubber match goes to Tritons 7-1, as Red Robins season ends with a thud
space
The rubber match between the Antigo Red Robins and Notre Dame Academy did not go as Antigo had hoped Tuesday, as the Robins fell 7-1 in a WIAA hockey sectional semifinal, played at the Cornerstone Community Ice Center in Green Bay.

Notre Dame Academy took control of the game with a four goal burst in the second period as they move within a win of the state tournament.

The teams had met twice during the regular season, with Notre Dame winning 6-1 on Jan. 9 in Green Bay, and the Robins taking a 4-2 final at the Warrior Invitational in Wausau Jan. 20.

Tuesday’s game was scoreless for a lengthy stretch of the first period, before Notre Dame got on the board first at the 12:23 mark, thanks to an unassisted goal from Corbin Skinner.

The game remained 1-0 until just under three minutes into the second when the Tritons made it 2-0. With Chris Krueger in the penalty box on a holding call, Notre Dame cashed in the man advantage with Captain Mike Gregoire getting credit for the goal, with assists from Logan Braun and Jacob Conrad.

The floodgates soon opened for the Tritons with two goals coming in a span of just one minute and 44 seconds of the second. John Fry scored unassisted at the 7:54 mark, and Charlie Wied just got the puck underneath goaltender Brody Bunnell’s leg pad to essentially put the game out of reach at 4-0.

The power play goal to go up 2-0 really took the wind out of our sails, Head Coach Matt Borneman said. That really led to things snowballing on us.

Antigo did score their lone goal at the 12:16 mark of the period, when Isaac Wickersheim was there to put home a rebound off a Matt Winter shot.

Their D likes to jump in the play offensively and leave the blue line undefended, Borneman said. We were looking to counter that and the one time we did, we turned it into a nice odd man rush and Wint put a great unselfish low shot to generate the rebound and Wick drove the net to hammer it home, was a great team play.

Notre Dame did reclaim the momentum 35 seconds later courtesy of Tyler Foytik, making it 5-1 heading into the third, and proceeded to add two third period goals for the 7-1 final.

Fry led his team in points with three, coming on two goals and an assist.

Shots stood at 29-19 in favor of Notre Dame, with Bunnell making 22 saves for the Robins. Bo Buckley stopped 18 of 19 in net for NDA.

Notre Dame was holding out for grade A looks instead of just peppering us, Borneman noted. They had enough possessions in the zone to put up 40 plus, but held off for better looks.

Antigo finishes the season with a record of 11-13-2.

Great season to dig out of a 2-7 start to become conference champs and make it to sectionals is a great accomplishment, Borneman added. We had our sights set on a larger target but this group has a lot they can hang their hat on to be proud of.

Notre Dame Academy, a two seed and champions of the Fox River Classic Conference are 17-7-2 and advance to play Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha in this Friday’s sectional final. The game will be played in Green Bay beginning at 8 p.m., with the winner heading to the state tournament.

The loss capped off a memorable career for an Antigo senior group that won four straight Great Northern Conference championships and were involved in multiple deep playoff runs, including a state appearance in 2016.
