Robins ready to host annual holiday hockey tournament
space
The Antigo Red Robins hockey team opens play today in its annual holiday tournament at the Langlade County Multi-Purpose Building.

The Robins welcome in two high-caliber opponents, in former Wisconsin Valley Conference rival D.C. Everest, and Bay Port, the team that upset them in the WIAA playoffs a season ago.

The event will run through Saturday and features junior varsity contests as well.

Today, Antigo and D.C. Everest will match up. The Robins enter with a frustrating five game losing streak and a 2-7 overall record, coming against a plethora of tough competition. The skid was perhaps capped off by a 3-2 loss at Appleton United Friday night, a game in which the Robins outshot United 60-21, but still came up on the short end.

Everest is enjoying a strong season at 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the Wisconsin Valley. The Evergreens lone Valley loss came to state-power Wausau West by a score of 2-1.

Everest does have a win over the lone common opponent between themselves and Antigo, in Northland Pines. The Evergreens beat the Eagles in their season opener Nov. 21 at the Eagle River Dome, 4-2, while the Robins fell at home to Pines, 3-2 on Dec. 19.

D.C. Everest’s offense has been in high gear of late, totaling 40 goals in its past five games, although not against the outstanding opponents it saw early in the season.

Leading the high-powered Evergreen attack is J.J. Berdal, with a team high 10 goals to go with 12 assists for 22 total points. Ty Tretter has racked up 21 points, including a team-leading 14 assists, while Ryan Begley has 16 points, coming on eight goals and eight assists.

C.J. Levis leads the Robins in scoring with nine points, including six goals and three assists.

Today’s varsity game begins at 6 p.m., while the junior varsity game starts at 4 p.m.

Friday will feature games between D.C. Everest and Bay Port, also with a start time of 4 p.m. for JV and 6 p.m. for varsity.

Saturday, Antigo will take its turn against Bay Port, in a rematch of last year’s regional final in Antigo, in which the sixth-seeded Pirates upended the Robins in overtime on their way to a run that would take them all the way to the state tournament, before finally falling to Sun Prairie.

This year’s Bay Port team appears much like Antigo, holding a 2-7-1 record against a tough slate of opponents. The Pirates have three common opponents with the Robins, defeating Appleton United 3-0, and falling to Stevens Point 5-4 and Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha 5-0.

The Robins lost to all three, including similar scores against both SPASH and Neenah/Hortonville/Menasha.

Aaron Ribar is the Pirates top scorer with 12 points on the season.

Saturday’s games are at an earlier start, with the JV getting underway at 2 p.m. and the varsity at 4.
