Lakers' ball handling outshoots Hornets in cross-county boys basketball game

The Elcho boys basketball team traveled to White Lake for a Northern Lakes Conference contest in the first of five consecutive road games for the Hornets.

The match-up between the two teams has been close in the past and that continued into Tuesday night's game as the the Hornets would fall 62-49.

Elcho controlled the game early enjoying a 7-0 lead from the tip-off before White Lake was able to slow the game down and get on the board. Once on the board, the Lakers continued to find the hoop tying the game and keeping pressure on Elcho. After tying the game, they went on a run putting in nine unanswered points. 

The change in momentum put the Lakers up 19-10 with six minutes remaining in the first half. The Hornets were finally able to stop the Lakers run when Kolton Schmidt was fouled with 4:28 remaining and went 1-2 from the line. The half would close with White Lake's lead cut down to just three 22-19.

Coming back to the floor after the break, both teams found better offensive rhythm. The Hornets Hunter Novak had a big second half putting in 10 points on the teams way to 30. The majority of the teams free throws also came in the second shooting 16 of its 25 attempts going 62 percent in the game.

But White Lake found a way to get the ball spread around the floor with five players sharing in the scoring. They added 40 points in the second as they pulled away from the Hornets and took the victory. 

The Hornets leading scorer was Mac Morrison with 24 points while going 4-5 from the foul line. Hunter Novak followed with 16 and found himself at the foul line often going eight for 13. Kristian Klinger put in six, Kyle Klinger added two, and Schmidt got one.

The Lakers were led by Mitchell Wegner playing a consistent game getting 21 in the contest with two three pointers while shooting 1 for 2 from the line, Chris Schewe came in with 17 and a three, Anthonie Harris hit nine, Braden Fredrick added eight while being perfect on free throws at 2 for 2, Jamison Smith added five and Bobby Strong contributed two.

Elcho will head to Crandon to continue Northern Lakes Conference play on Friday as they look to improve its 1-4 overall record.

White Lake now 2-2 overall will also continue NLC play traveling to Three Lakes on Friday.
