space
The 2017-18 wrestling season got underway for the Red Robins as it hosted the annual John Roberts Duals Saturday. The home team was looking to defend its 2016 title, along with several first place individual finishes.

Once again, taking first place as a team, Antigo reigned over Lakeland in second, Rosholt in third, Waupaca in fourth, Menominee Indian in fifth, Manawa in sixth, Cameron in seventh, Bayfield in eighth, and Elcho in ninth.

I’m very happy about the way we wrestled, First year Head Coach Ben Olsen said. We won several individual matches that would be considered upsets and we had some new wrestlers getting their first victories.

Collinn Eldridge was the lone repeat first place bracket winner as he competed in the 182 pound bracket. Finishing a perfect 4-0 he started off with a 8-0 major decision over Reese Anderson of Rosholt. Eldridge went on to pin Elliott Miller of Menominee Indian in 5:13 and Andre Starynski of Lakeland in 1:29.

At 120 pounds, Nathan Dykstra took first in the 120 pound class also finishing with a perfect 4-0 record. He won his first match against Dominick Betro on an injury at 1:54 while he pinned Joe Perez of Menominee Indian at 3:58.

Korbin Kreuger also took the top spot on the podium with a first place in the 160 pound bracket. He finished 4-0 on the day. Krueger started with a 10-2 major decision over Isaac Groshek of Rosholt. He followed with a pin against Alex Peters of Menominee Indian at one minute, then went on to pin Damien Pomeranke of Waupaca in 54 seconds while he finished with a 5-1 decision against Seth Gonzalez of Lakeland.

Antigo had a pair of second place finishes in Ben Stimac at 132 and Brandon Lucht at 145. Both finished 4-0 on the day.

Stimac earned a pair of pins against Brandon Bonds of Rosholt at 3:09 and Caleb Schroeder of Waupaca at 1:07 while Lucht added three pins to his name. He defeated Mike Charnecke of Rosholt in 1:44, Bobby Komanekin of Menominee Indian in 1:07, and Jimmy Intribus of Waupaca in 28 seconds.

Finishing in third for Antigo was William Hull at 138 pounds and Nick Roller at 220. Hull went 3-1 with a pair of pins over Brock Lyshik of Rosholt at 3:53 and Morgun Fish of Menominee Indian at 1:32. Roller went 3-1 with three pins. He took down Patrick Baker of Rosholt in 2:52, Kai Badgley of Waupaca in 40 seconds and Noah Wingo of Lakeland in 22 seconds. Roller also placed fourth in the 285 pound class.

Finishing in fifth place for Antigo was Conner Dettman at 3-1 at 113 pounds, Logan Edwards also going 3-1 at 126 pounds, John Schlieve going 2-2 at 170 pounds, and Jessip Williams also going 2-2 at 195 pounds.

In seventh place for the Robins was Ben Brown who finished 2-2 at 106 pounds, and Royce Bauer at 2-2 in the 152 bracket. Gideon Sass placed ninth in the 220 and 285 pound brackets with a 1-3 record.

The schedule gets more challenging as we travel to Marshfield Thursday and the Neenah Duals Saturday, Olsen said. These matches will give us a good idea of where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on.

Thursday’s meet at Marshfield begins at 7:15 p.m.
