Mattoon Christmas starts tonight with 7 p.m. parade
space
Mattoon is opening its Christmas season at 7 p.m. today, and everyone is invited to join in the fun.

The parade will start at the community’s north ball diamond and roll down the main street in what are expected to be ideal late fall weather conditions. The experts are predicting the temperature reading at 7 p.m. will be 37 degrees and there isn’t a snowflake on the ground making it a perfect evening to linger a little longer outdoors.

The village of Mattoon is sponsoring the events linked to Christmas, and on Thursday afternoon Zak Kickhaver, who is associated with the village, was busy hanging lights in the north park area and putting the finishing touches on the community Christmas tree.

Another addition to the park will be a skating rink, but that is awaiting arrival of freezing temperatures which are reportedly right around the corner.

Santa will make his initial visit to Mattoon for the season tonight as part of the parade, and return quickly.

On Saturday a holiday craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Community Hall, and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be arriving at noon. There will be door prizes, a cake raffle, and youth fun table. Food and soups will be served all day with proceeds to go to the long road of recovery for Stacey Zarda.
