Council stalls action on apartments
space
The Antigo Common Council Wednesday delayed action on an agreement between the city and S.C. Swiderski for construction of 40 to 56 two and three bedroom apartments with attached garages at the intersection of Pierce Avenue and North Hogan Street.

At a brisk 10-minute meeting, Mayor Bill Brandt asked to have the agreement sent back to committee for some further clarifications.

All other agenda items were approved without dissension.

The council inked several bids related to the cleanup of blighted buildings.

The first involved a residential home at 217 Field St. that was severely damaged by fire that was transferred to the city through a tax reversion process by Langlade County. Duffek Sand & Gravel will demolish the property at a cost of $8,495.

The second resolution focused on 814 Fifth Ave., a downtown retail building most recently known as Java Junction, also transferred to the city through tax reversion. Aldermen agreed to hire Mavo Systems Wisconsin to proceed with the asbestos removal and proper disposal of materials. It will cost $5,286 for the work.

Once the asbestos abatement is completed the city will likely move forward with demolition.

In other matters, aldermen:

—accepted an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for $102,781 and approved the city’s 5 percent match of $5,139. The funds will be used to purchase four Power Load systems to lift and load the emergency medical services cot into the ambulance.

—selected Precision Ice Blast of Peshtigo for blasting and painting of the primary clarifier in the wastewater treatment plant at a cost of $21,990.

—inked the mayor’s appointment of Cathy LeBrun to the Hotel Motel Room Tax Commission.

—and approved the street closure of Seventh Avenue and Field Street on Aug. 20 for the Badgerland Classics and Customs Car Show.
