Following an opening round win over Kaukauna in the Class AA State Tournament in Merrill on Wednesday, the Antigo American Legion baseball team continued its march through the winners bracket, facing Kewaunee County Thursday.

Kewaunee County, a mix of Luxemburg-Casco and Kewaunee High School players, entered the contest with a record of 19-1, including a 5-1 round one win over Waterford. In a battle of the sea, the Typhoon defeated the Lakers in a slugfest 11-10.

Kewaunee County jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the game, with an RBI single from Kyle Routhieaux and a run scoring ground out by Mason Isenberg in the top of the first inning.

Antigo responded in the bottom half, plating three runs. Garrett Held continued to swing a hot bat, driving in two runs with a single and A.J. Kirsch added an RBI single of his own for a 3-2 lead.

The Lakers tied the game at three in the second inning on an RBI single by Anthony Otradovec, but the Typhoon went back in front in the bottom of the second, and again it was Held, this time with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3.

The scoring onslaught continued in the third inning, with the Lakers scoring three times in the top half, thanks to a throwing error and RBI hits from Jordan Jorgensen and Mitch Jandrin.

Antigo would once again rally with a big inning of their own in the bottom half, scoring six runs.

Ryan Brauer laced an RBI double, Matt Winter was then hit by a pitch setting up Jake Husnick’s run scoring single. Hunter Kirsch followed with a walk allowing Held to drive in two runs with a hit. Jesse Jankowski and A.J. Kirsch kept things going with RBI singles to give their team a 10-6 advantage.

A Hunter Kirsch RBI single in the bottom of the fourth would extend Antigo’s lead to 11-6.

Kewaunee County closed the gap with three runs in the fifth with a run scoring on an error, an RBI hit by Jandrin, and the third run would score on a pick-off attempt. Husnick threw down to second base from his catcher’s position, catching the Lakers’ runner in a pickle situation, but the run scored prior to the third out being recorded and the score stood at 11-9.

The top half of the sixth saw Kyle Routhieaux lead off the inning with a solo home run for Kewaunee County to get the Lakers within a run at 11-10, but Antigo reliever Jake Fleischman would then settle in and get out of the inning with no further damage.

The top of the seventh inning saw Kewaunee County threaten again with two outs. Austin Tlachac hit a double, and Routhieaux was intentionally walked by reliever Nick Marshall. Marshall was then able to get Jake Thyes to fly out to centerfield to end the game. Marshall’s scoreless seventh inning earned him the save.

Cody Urban started on the mound for Antigo and gave up nine runs, six earned on eight hits. Urban walked four and struck out three in four and two thirds innings of work. Fleischman gave up just the lone run on Routhieaux’s homer in one and a third innings.

Held and Hunter Kirsch led the Typhoon with three hits each, with Held driving in a total of five runs. Winter, Husnick, A.J. Kirsch and Meinert all had two hits each, Ryan Brauer doubled.

Antigo will now advance to play fellow 2-0 squad Holmen tonight at 7 p.m. Antigo holds a 17-10 overall mark on the season, Holmen is 23-6.

Holmen defeated River Falls on Thursday 5-1. Other finals included Waterford beating Kaukauna 11-1 and Beaver Dam topping Merrill 3-1. Kaukauna and Merrill were both eliminated with the losses.

Also today, two elimination games will precede the Antigo/Holmen game. Beaver Dam takes on Kewaunee County at 1 p.m., followed by Waterford and River Falls at 4 p.m.

All games are being played at Athletic Park in Merrill.
