Antigo 10U All Stars start strong, rout Merrill 10-0
space
The Antigo 10-year-old Little League All Star team won their opening game in the District Five tournament on Tuesday, defeating Merrill 10-0 in five innings.

Antigo started the game strong, as starting pitcher Porter Nicholson retired Merrill in order in the top half of the first inning, and his team plated four runs in the bottom half.

Preston Knapkavage led off with a single, followed by two more singles courtesy of Nicholson and Carter Wassen to load the bases. That would bring up clean up hitter Zone Wienke who preceeded to clear the bases with a double. Wienke then came home two batters later when Dylan Matuszewski drove him in.

That would be all the scoring until the fifth inning, when Antigo tacked on six more runs, highlighted by a double by Knapkavage, as the game ended on the mercy rule.

Knapkavage went three for four to lead the Antigo attack, including two doubles. Zone Wienke finished two for three, with Nicholson, Wassen, Tre Wienke and Mitch Meyer all adding singles.

Nicholson was the winning pitcher, tossing four shutout innings. The Antigo ace allowed just three base hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out two. Wassen pitched a scoreless fifth, putting only one base runner aboard via a walk. He recorded two strikeouts.

Antigo’s 10-year-old all stars advance to take on Northwoods Tuesday at 7 p.m., as the tournament moves to Doepke Park in Wausau. Northwoods advanced with a 7-1 win over Rhinelander.

A win on Tuesday would move Antigo into the finals of the double elimination event. The tourny winner will head to the 10-year-old state Little Little tournament in Madison.
