Antigo Area Weekend Activities

One of the busiest weekends of the summer has arrived.

Events are spread out across the long Fourth of July holiday, stretching from tonight through Tuesday, with live music, including some Elvis, parades, a street dance and much more on the docket.

A review of community Fourth of July activities is printed on today’s front page. A look at other events, taken from the advertising columns, follows:

MUSIC IN THE PARK

There’s music on Monday and Thursday in Antigo, Saturday in White Lake, and Wednesday in Elcho this week.

The shows kick off Saturday at the White Lake Pavilion, with Lovin’ Country performing from 1 to 3 p.m. and The Cougars from 5 to 9 p.m. There will be a parade at noon and fireworks at dusk.

On Monday, the great show band Hip Pocket will perform at the City Park bandstand at 6:30 p.m. in a show sponsored by Aspirus Langlade Hospital. It will be pass the hat night for Music in the Park. The Hospital Auxiliary will serve barbecues, hot dogs, pies and custard at 5:30 p.m.

The Elcho Community Pavilion will host Lovin’ Country on Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m., with the Elcho United Church of Christ Men’s Club serving sandwiches, pie and ice cream.

Music returns to the City Park bandstand on Thursday with the Sawtooth Brothers at 6:30 p.m. in a show sponsored by music donors. Tree Toppers 4-H will serve pie and custard at 5:30 p.m.

Antigo’s rain location is the Heinzen Pavilion in Peaceful Valley Park.

Brochures with schedules are available at locations throughout the community.

MORE MUSIC

The Hayek Family Variety Show and Elvis Tribute comes to the Mattoon Community Hall tonight for a 7 p.m. show. Admission is $3.

Elcho Fire and EMS will host a street dance Saturday, beginning at noon. Bobby Vintage will perform from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. with Big Back Yard on stage from 8 p.m. to midnight. There will be food and raffles, and fireworks at dusk at Sno-Devil’s Park.

Held’s Bar will celebrate 20 years in business on Saturday. There will be free tap beer until it is gone and live rock and roll music outside by the ProKrastinators, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Fireworks are planned at dusk. Bring your lawn chair.

DINING

The Elcho United Church of Christ Men’s Club will hold its 20th annual chicken barbecue on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. at the Elcho Community Pavilion. The menu includes barbecued chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked beans, salad bar, dessert and coffee. There will be a display for the Northwoods Tractor Club and drone demonstrations by Unmanned Systems Inc. and Cameron Berg at 12:30 and 2 p.m.

SPORTS

The 44th annual Phlox men’s semi-fast softball tournament kicks off today at 6 p.m. at the Norwood Ball Park and continues through Saturday. There will be fireworks Saturday at dusk. Food and refreshments will be available on the grounds.

MOVIES

Now showing at the Palace Twin Theater are Despicable Me 3, rated PG, and Transformers, rated PG-13.

Despicable Me 3 can be seen Friday and Saturday at 7 and 9 p.m.; Sunday through Thursday at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Transformers is playing Friday and Saturday at 6:30 and 8:45 p.m.; Sunday through Thursday at 5 and 7:15 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The Palace offers $5 Tuesdays with all movies just $5 and extra shows at 3 p.m. Get a free small popcorn too.

SALES

There will be a moving sale today until 4 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, at N7400 Hwy. 52, Lily. Furniture, household goods, clothing and more will be sold.

Zurko’s Maximus flea market is at the Langlade County Fairgrounds today until 4 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday it moves to the Shawano County Fairgrounds. Admission is $2.

OTHER EVENTS

The Langlade County Historical Society Museum is on summer hours. It is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The complex includes the Carnegie library building, Deleglise Cabin and 440 locomotive and caboose. It is located at 404 Superior St.

The Old Corner School at Neva Corners will be open on July 1 through 4; and Sept. 2 through 4 or by appointment. Call Peg Aulik at 715 623-4212 to set up a time. The school offers a treasure trove of civic lessons, history, community lore and early life in Langlade County.

The White Lake Historical Society is open Wednesdays and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It operates the Depot Museum and adjoining historical center.

Peace Lutheran Ministries will host a Vacation Bible School day camp July 10 to 13. Camps are offered for grades one through six and three years to kindergarten. For details, call the church at 715 623-2200.

Antigo Gymnastics Camp will be held July 17 through 21 at the Sheldon Fieldhouse. There are sessions for preschool/beginner through high school. Registration forms may be picked up at Bula Chiropractic.

Merry’s Berries is now open for picking. Cost is $1.69 a pound for pick-your-own and $3.40 per pound for prepicked orders. Call ahead for prepicked orders and current picking conditions at 715 627-4630.

Black Hawk Ridge, located two miles south of Antigo off Highway 45, is holding an open house today until 5 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Meet the horses, learn about the programs, enjoy games for youngsters and have some light refreshments and food.
