Antigo girls soccer team loses to Newman, hosts Lakeland tonight
space
Although coming out strong, the Antigo High School girls soccer team fell prey to a strong Wausau Newman squad Monday and lost at Listle Field, 9-0.

In the first of its seven games this week, coach Bethany Bauknecht noted that her squad knew what they had to do, having played the Cardinals last week, and did so. Newman beat Antigo 6-0 last Tuesday.

We were able to start the game with a strong offense and dominated the first 10 minutes of the game, she said, We got the first shot on goal.

The quick start faded quickly, attributed by the coach to poor communication, and Newman opened scoring at 13:16. The Lady Robins responded, challenging Newman well and drawing them offside to avert a couple of Cardinal scoring chances.

Newman made the score 2-0 in the 30th minute of the game on a goal initially wiped away by an official but then over-ruled.

The coach noted that the call seemed to unsettle her team, and Newman scored twice more before halftime to make the score 4-0.

Suffering from communication breakdowns, Antigo began the second half slowly and the Cardinals pushed ahead by 5-0 in the 48th minute. Ten minutes later, Newman scored again on a breakaway to grab a 6-0 led.

Antigo’s best chance at a goal came after being cited for an unsportsmanlike conduct call on an aggressive collision but freshman captain McKenzie Schroepfer just missed on an attempt well-played by the Newman goalie.

Newman scored three more goals after that to make the final score, 9-0.
