Robins have tough night, will host Friday's finale
space
It wasn’t at all the repeat performance the Robins had hoped for.

Taking on league-leader Lakeland for a second time in four days, the Antigo High School girls basketball team lost its second straight, 53-28.

We played a good first half, coach Jim Kondzela said. We did well against their press, were patient and by the half were still in the game. The second half was a different story.

Guided by Lilith Schumann and Melissa Bruckner who combined for 37 points, the undefeated Thunderbirds had only a six-point, 20-14, advantage at the break. But three quick Robin turnovers to open the second half allowed Lakeland to rapidly expand the gap and outscore its guests 33-14 over the final minutes to tally the comfortable win.

Turnovers were especially tough to overcome for Antigo as the team was tagged with 31 on the night. Lakeland had 13.

They are a good team, Kondzela said.

Laurissa Belott and Kendall Smith paced the Robin offense with seven points each followed by Hannah Zenkovich with six. Morgan Hotchkiss, Sydney Lenzner, Brinna Mauk and Allison Kondzela all put in a pair.

As a team, Antigo shot 13-for-41 from the field and were 2-for-8 at the line.

Lakeland had only six chances at the stripe, making three, but were 24-for-55 from the field including a pair of three-pointers by Schumann. The senior finished with 20 points while Bruckner had 17.

The win improved Lakeland to 11-0 in the Great Northern Conference while the Robins dropped to 4-7.

Antigo will close its regular season campaign Friday at home for Senior Night play versus Mosinee. A. Kondzela and Belott will be recognized as part of the festivities. Game time is 7:15 p.m.

It should be a good game, Coach Kondzela said, likening it to the last time the two teams met on Jan. 13. Mosinee, with home-court advantage, got the edge 61-59 in overtime.

Earning a No. 9 seed for WIAA tournament play, Antigo will travel to Rhinelander on Tuesday. The Hodags won the first two meetings between the squads 41-35 on Dec. 6 and 58-37 on Jan. 24.

The winner will take on No. 1 seed Hortonville for semi-final action Friday, Feb. 24.
