Six Antigo volleyball players named to all-conference team Nov. 3, 2009 Six members of the Antigo High School varsity volleyball squad were named to the 2009 Great Northern All-Conference team.
Heather Kakes received first team honors, Suzy Solin was named to the second team and Hannah Griffiths, Kim Lindner, Kaylee Matucheski and Molly Young all received honorable mention.
Kakes finished among the GNC’s frontrunners on kills, aces and digs. On kills, the senior collected 86 total in league play to finish 10th overall. She was also 10th on aces with 16 and ninth in digs with 83.
Solin served as Antigo’s kill leader with 112 over 39 games played. She also collected 106 digs and was the Robins’ top server with an overall success rate of 96 percent.
Griffiths scored 88 kills for the Robins and was Antigo’s block leader with 31 — second only to Tomahawk’s Kellan Flynn (37). Lindner went up for 33 blocks while Young, at setter, was the team’s assist leader with 263. She was also strong at the serve, finishing among the league’s most consistent performers.
Matucheski was a leader on defense, collecting 91 digs as libero.
As a team, the Red Robins finished at 8-4 in the Great Northern Conference and 22-15 overall. Merrill, at 12-0, won the conference crown. Tomahawk, at 10-2, was second followed by Antigo, Medford and Lakeland (4-8), Mosinee (3-9) and Northland Pines (1-11).
Kakes joins a first team crowd which includes Kayla Duesing, Abbey Kremsreiter and Leah Monti, all of Merrill; Kaitlin Doughty and Kaylyn Olson of Tomahawk; and Olivia Smola of Medford.
Doughty, a junior, was named Player of the Year.
Joining Solin on the second team were Jessica Holbach of Medford; Christine Chapleau and Amanda Jensen of Merrill; Alyssa Rusin of Mosinee; and Jenna Otterholt and Sydney Lakatos of Tomahawk.
Joining Antigo’s foursome on the honorable mention list were Carol Falesch of Lakeland; Megan Wibben of Medford, Kaylin Byer of Merrill, Kayla Harris of Mosinee, Meagan Neis of Northland Pines and Kellan Flynn of Tomahawk.
The late Sally Pfund of Merrill, who tragically died during surgery following a brain aneurysm, was named Coach of the Year.
