Historical Society's banquet Nov. 12 Nov. 3, 2009 The history of the Antigo Daily Journal will be the focus when the Langlade County Historical Society holds its fall banquet Thursday, Nov. 12.
The event will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Cocktails will be served at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and then the program and business meeting at 7 p.m.
Editor Fred Berner, whose family has published the Journal on a daily basis since 1905, will recount the publication’s history and the role of a local newspaper in a small community.
During the business portion of the evening, Society President Joe Hermolin will review the events of the past year, including the nearly-completed project to replace the museum’s roof with a long-term painted steel version.
The project includes restoring the long-missing widow’s walk at the top of the roof along with the railing on the south portico. It is a costly undertaking and fund-raising is continuing.
“The building has always been a landmark, first as the Carnegie library and now as our museum,” Hermolin said. “It was important to the board that we retain and restore its stunning character but the work is coming at a heavy price and we are seeking additional donations.”
The business portion of the evening will also include election of board members. Three seats are up for election. Hermolin and Nancy Bugni are running for new terms while Joe Sveda has declined to seek re-election. The board is recommending that Steve Bradley, a former Society president, be elected as his replacement.
The dinner is open to members and non-members. Reservations for the dinner and program are $20 and may be made by calling the museum at 627-4464 by Monday. Those wishing to attend the program only are invited to come at 7 p.m.
