Humane Society President Bob Purmort digs a trench at the animal shelter.

Animal shelter remodeling adding more warm kennels for wintertime

Oct. 31, 2009

The Langlade County Humane Society animal shelter is filled to capacity, and now volunteers are undertaking a minor building project to keep the canines and cats more comfortable in the wintertime.

As fund-raising continues for eventual construction of a new shelter, volunteers are making a few improvements to the present 1980s-era building that was never designed to hold the population of pets it now contains.

Outdoor dog runs have been added and covered, foster families recruited to take care of pets in need, and now the kennels located on the west side of the shelter are being enclosed and heated.

Kennel supervisor Jenna Nelson explained that the work will provide a fully-enclosed area for the dogs, with windows, a walkway and comfortable temperatures during the deepest winter chill.

In past years, the kennels were sheltered only by the roof and a tarpaulin windbreak and had to be moved inside to small cages when winter weather conditions became too severe. That, in turn, riled up the cats housed inside.

“Now we will have them in big, heated kennels,” she said. “This will create more interior space For the dogs. It will also keep them healthier with light and ventilation.”

Weather permitting, work is expected to be completed within a few weeks.
