A Sample of Peeps at our Past for today

Oct. 27, 2009

75 YEARS AGO TODAY

October 27, 1934

Heaney, considered to be the greatest magician in the world, will be at the Antigo High School auditorium under the auspicious of the PTA tonight. Heaney, who worked as an assistant for the great Houdini, will present two hours of entertainment performing all sorts of magic, including making young ladies float over the audience.

The Home Theater isn’t about to outdone. On the stage at the Superior Street theater, there will be floor shows Wednesday and Thursday night with a Warner Baxter film on the screen, “Canary Island.” On stage will be the Frisco Frolics Musical Review with Maurice Cash, performing song and comedy, Maurice Linal, the master of fun, Little Betty Lorenz, acrobat, dancer and contortionist, Frankie Bernard, a girl with a great blues voice, and more.

The guards at the school crossing will start working tomorrow with the men filling the positions coming from the welfare lists under the FERA program. They will be supervised by Officer “Sheebe” Shebuski.

Sen. Robert M. LaFollette will be in Antigo Thursday evening to speak on behalf of the state Progressive Party Ticket. He will make his address at the Music Hall.

50 YEARS AGO TODAY

Dr. Josef Seilin has opened a medical practice in the Hill building at Fifth Avenue and Edison Street. He has been associated with the Veterans Administration’s medical facilities in the Upper Midwest and has had a farm in the town of Harrison for the past 11 years.

The Wisconsin Department of Welfare has told the county board it has two choices, either build a new jail or make drastic improvements to the old one. The state has limited to seven the number of prisoners that can be in the facility at one time, and quite frequently the number is higher.

S.C. Calhoun of the Langlade County Teachers College addressed the board of supervisors asking that more room be added to the Normal School. Nine students were turned away this year because there is no room for them in the class areas.

Tomorrow only, Easy Way Super Valu will offer pumpkins for 5 cents each. They are ideal for making jack o’lanterns.

Merrill and Wisconsin Rapids are sharing second place in the Valley Conference now, and could break the tie with games this Friday evening. Antigo, already the champion, plays against Ashland in a non-conference tilt.

25 YEARS AGO TODAY

October 27, 1984

The fate of the former Kempster school will be decided next month. The Elcho school district recently acquired the property from the now defunct Northwoods Sportsman Club but just what will happen with the small run-down schoolhouse, whether it be sold, moved or simply torn down, will be the topic of discussion for Elcho residents in November.

In yet another Elcho-related topic, northwoods police are continuing to investigate last month’s death of Lolita Chadek, an elderly Rhinelander resident and past Elcho elementary teacher. The state crime lab has ruled that she was strangled but the question remains as to who.

One of the larger advertisements today is one placed by TJ’s Sport & Ski which is holding a winter sports sale through the weekend. Among the deals, there’s a choice of Nike, Adidas and Tiger basketball shoes for only $18 and all hockey equipment is marked 25 percent off its original price. There’s also a selection of downhill and cross country ski packages starting at $89.

It’s difficult to miss seeing today’s photo of the Antigo High School football team. The picture crosses all six columns of the sports page and accompanies a story on the squad’s planned meeting tomorrow night versus its rivals from D.C. Everest. The battle is being pegged as the year’s best matchup as the two undefeated teams challenge for the coveted Wisconsin Valley Conference title. From all indications, an overflow crowd — perhaps the largest in Antigo history — is expected to pack the Athletic Park stands.

10 YEARS AGO TODAY

October 27, 1999

The golfing world has lost one of its greats as authorities have confirmed the death of Payne Stewart. The outspoken golfer and most recently, the 1999 U.S. Open champion was one of at least six people on a Lear jet which flew aimlessly for hours before crashing in South Dakota.

Work is moving along quite nicely on the new Langlade County lockup which has a planned opening for next spring. The sprawling 108 bed facility carries a $6 million price tag and will replace the existing Safety Building jail which is bursting at its seams and operating with 1960s jail technology.
