Fans root for the beloved Washington Senators, who eventually lose to those “Damn Yankees!” in a scene from the upcoming Antigo Community Theater production. |
Community theater will stage 'Yankees' Oct. 24, 2009 Those Damn Yankees! are at it again.
As the New York pinstripers appear on the verge of another World Series appearance, Antigo Community Theater will bring alive the story of the 1950s incarnation in the delightful musical.
Six evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. with opening night on Friday, Nov. 6. The schedule continues with shows on Saturday, Nov. 7, Thursday, Nov. 12, Friday, Nov.13 and closing Saturday, Nov.14. A Sunday matinee performance will be held on Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. All will be held at Antigo High School’s Volm Theater.
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the team won 10 out of 12 American League pennants. This was an unbelievable winning streak and it inspired the book "The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant" by Douglass Wallop that in turn led to the smash 1955 Broadway hit "Damn Yankees."
The musical is the tale of an aging baseball fanatic, Joe Boyd, who considers selling his soul to the devil for a chance to become a young hardball hitter and play for his beloved team. But he soon discovers what is really important in life.
The show is animated with non-stop hits, including the boisterous “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo.," the sultry “Whatever Lola Wants," and of course “You Gotta Have Heart.".
Making their debut performances with ACT are Rusty Mehlberg playing the part of young Joe Hardy, Molly Hoffman as Lola, who usually gets what she wants, Dennis Klement as team manger Benny Van Buren and Steve Kirsch as Rocky.
Returning to the stage are ACT veterans Keith Wolf (Joe Boyd), Bob Lomprey (Mr. Applegate), Darlaen Jansen (Sister), Peggy Benes (Doris), Denise Hale (Gloria Thorpe), Matt Wagner (Linville), Jim Martinsen (Welch) and Bill Eschmann (the Commissioner).
Recent familiar faces on the ACT set are Tina Moreno (Meg), Ron Michels (Lynch), Steve Eckerman (Postmaster), Adam Evans (Guard), and Sharon Barske (Miss Weston).
Rounding out the ballplayers are James Petroskey, Seth Hale, Chris Eckerman, Zach Zalewski and Tony Schuh.
The chorus and fans include Paul Sweeny, Katie Hovland-Frisch, Darlene Eckerman, Hillary Messer-Franz, Rebekah Wolf, Brittany Kirsch, Laura Sweeney, Hannah Lawyer, Emily Merry, Kristine Bie and Shannon Stanton,.
The musical is under the direction of Moira Scupien. Laurel Monson is the musical director and Margie Vogel is choreographer. Lynda Eschmann is serving as production assistant. Stage managers are Julie Barger and Karla Martinsen, with set design by Denise Madison.
Anyone interested in working on the production behind the scenes will be welcomed. For further information call Moira Scupien at 627-4048.
