School board to fine tune budget Tuesday Oct. 26, 2009 The Antigo school board will fine-tune the budget and certify the tax levy at its regular October meeting Tuesday.
The board will convene at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
The board approved the $28.5 million spending plan in August, but must take final action and certify the levy in October, after state aid, enrollment and equalized valuation numbers are known.
The revised budget calls for a total levy of $9,030,213, including a new $100,000 stipend added for lighting and energy management system projects at the high school and middle school. The extra dollars fall outside of state spending limits under a two-year program approved by the legislature earlier this year.
Director of Business Services Mary Jo Filbrandt said that in order to qualify, projects must prove that they will result in energy savings and lower bills.
With the addition, the district is projecting a mill rate of $8.31 per $1,000 of equalized valuation, a 61 cent increase over 2008-09.
That means that the owner of a $100,000 home will pay $831 in proper taxes for K-12 schools, a $61 increase.
Schools make up the lion’s share of local property taxes but are not the total amount. Levies for the city, town or village, county, technical school and state must all be added before the final bill is determined.
In other business, the board will discuss revisions to policies regarding student progress reporting to parents and family and medical leave.
The board is also expected to approve DLR Group’s plan for a comprehensive study of the proposed biomass pilot project, which could potentially heat the high school and aquatic center with wood waste. The district is in line for a series of grants and no-interest loans to fund the work but has delayed any final action until it is determined if the potent cost savings are enough to cover debt payments.
DLR will be paid $23,000, contingent on funding, for the study.
The board will also ink its annual agreement with the Antigo Hockey Association for use of the multi-purpose building ice, hire a science teacher at the Middle School, a part-time housekeeper and a special education instructional assistant.
