Last man known to see Kayla arrested Oct. 26, 2009 The Antigo Police Department arrested a 24-year old man today in connection with the disappearance of an Antigo teen more than two months ago.
Authorities said the suspect, who resides in the Deerbrook area, will be charged with a felony count of second degree reckless endangerment of safety in regards to the disappearance of 15-year old Kayla Mae Berg.
Berg, who has since turned 16, was last seen on the night of Aug. 11 in Wausau in the vicinity of Colonial Manor, an elderly care facility on the far east side of the city located just off Highway 52.
According to Police Chief Eric Roller and Captain Nate Musolff, the suspect had driven Berg to Wausau and is the last known person to have had contact with the teen-ager.
“We have determined that his actions contributed to her now being listed as a missing and endangered person,” Musolff said.
A criminal complaint filed along with an arrest warrant in Langlade County Circuit Court details the suspect’s alleged involvement in the case.
According to that document, the suspect told law enforcement officers that he had spent time with Berg on Aug. 11 and had driven her to Wausau on her request.
He explained that she asked him to take her to a friend’s home and he dropped her off at a house located near a radio station on Highway 52. He said he did not recall seeing any lights or anyone at the residence. He told officials that he then returned to Antigo and went home.
According to the criminal complaint, the suspect told investigators that the pair had smoked a quantity of marijuana.
The suspect is slated to make a court appearance either later today or Tuesday.
Authorities stressed that the arrest by no means brings a conclusion to the investigation.
“We have and will continue to check out any lead we receive,” Roller said, explaining that the case has been the department’s top priority.
In addition to the law enforcement investigation, her family has been organizing a reward fund to provide information on the missing teen and through their efforts and Crimestoppers, it is taking shape.
Anyone interested in helping, along with those wishing to provide private donations, can contact CoVantage Credit Union in Antigo with donations made payable to the family of Kayla Berg.
Berg is described as having brown hair and brown eyes, weighing approximately 108 pounds and 5’ 2’’ tall.
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Antigo Police Department at (715) 627-6411 or Langlade County Crimestoppers at (715) 627-NAIL (6245).
