A paving crew installs new blacktop on the west side of the North Towne Centre parking lot.

Retailing boost continues on north side

Aug. 15, 2009

A flurry of construction activity is continuing to spark the Antigo retail community.

While various city panels, assisted by community members, continue to carve out the details of a revitalization program for the downtown core, heavy equipment, blacktop crews and construction is continuing at a quick pace on the north side.

As crews this week installed a new surface over the previously pitted North Towne Center parking lot, work was continuing inside the far west storefront, where Dunham Sports plans to open its doors later this year.

According to Building Inspector/Assessor Jerry Wilhelm, the store is moving quickly toward completion with an early autumn opening date anticipated.

With a slogan of “Get in the Game at Dunham!,” the retailer offers a wide mix of sporting goods and apparel. One of the largest full-line sporting goods chains in the U.S., Dunham’s was founded in 1937 as Dunham's Bait & Tackle in Waterford, Mich. It has now grown into a complete sports outfitter serving customers in 12 states, from Minnesota to Maryland from 150 stores.

Dunham’s is joining a revitalized shopping center that also includes the Pebbles department store, Sears, Northwoods Flooring, Fashion Bug, Dollar Tree, Goodwill and Cost Cutters.

The plaza also includes Kwik Trip and just-opened Subway/Mamma DeLuca’s Restaurant.

Perhaps the biggest news in Wilhelm’s monthly report concerned the vacant lot across from the Langlade County Fairgrounds, midway between downtown and the north side.

The lot was once home to Kentucky Fried Chicken and it will be again very soon, with Taco Bell returning to the mix as well.

“The developer is currently getting bids on the building and mechanicals,” Wilhelm said. “He is planning to get the shell up before fall and then finishing it off during the winter months.”

The inspector said that the plans were previously approved and “look great.”

In the downtown area, Wilhelm noted that Antigo Country Store is open, as is the relocated Flamingo Gift Shop. The plaza in the 700 block of Superior Street is becoming a busy place, with crews installing new Country Store signage and the weekly farm market growing as gardens mature and vendors fill their stalls.
