Hardee's closes here today, a 36-year run has ended Dec. 29, 2008 Abruptly, Antigo’s Hardee’s Restaurant closed its doors this morning.
Shortly after 10 a.m., employees at the restaurant taped up signs announcing the closure and locked the doors. By noontime, the posters advertising everything from biscuits and gravy to thickburgers were torn from the windows and the marquee read closed rather than announcing a two-for-one special.
Calls to the restaurant brought a “no comment’ from manager Karen Campbell. Calls to the corporate parents, Doro Inc. of Eau Claire, were not returned.
Hardee’s was an Antigo landmark, opening on Feb. 17, 1972 as Sandy’s.
The name change to Hardee’s came a year later and then in 1977 the business opened a new restaurant just to the north of the original Sandy’s, which was razed.
Originally constructed by a group of local businessman, Hardee’s became part of CKE Restaurant, parent of Hardee’s Food Systems Inc.
In 2000, CKE sold the restaurant along with 47 others to Doro Inc., a private company, based in Eau Claire, for $13.5 million.
Doro, formed in 1968, has operated Hardee’s Restaurants across Wisconsin for decades. It reported 27.1 million in sales in its most recent filing and 1,250 employees.
The closed sign advised customers to visit Doro Inc.’s other Hardee’s restaurants in Merrill and Wausau.
