Yule tree story raises reader's distrust, doubt Nov. 19, 2008 To the Antigo Journal:
I read with disgust and doubt the report on lights being banned on natural Christmas trees in church. I would point out that the code cited if taken in conjunction with the letter received by the city from Dick Leinenkugel, Secretary Department of Commerce, early this month does not ban lights on natural trees in churches.
It simply allows the local fire chief to make a decision for the community. It appears the local bureaucrats took the stupid way out and decided in the negative and then blamed the state. If Petroskey or Wozniak can show that my interpretation of the code and letter is incorrect I would appreciate them showing the Journal and their respective bosses.
The indication in the caption under the pictures is that fire departments are issuing new guide lines. Perhaps they are, however I have found with a few calls that the following departments are allowing lights on natural trees in churches: Merrill, Shawano, Rib Mountain, Wausau, Bonduel, Mequon—I'm sure I could add to this list with a few more phone calls. All of these departments can't be wrong.
I respectfully request that the Antigo Fire and Police Commission and the county board get these two “so called public servants’’ to do the right thing and change to allow lights.
