Mike Matousek quits post as mayor of Antigo May 27, 2008 Mike Matousek, a consistent and popular cheerleader for Antigo in his three years as mayor, has resigned the position immediately to pursue job opportunities elsewhere.
In a letter to Clerk-Treasurer Kaye Matucheski dated Friday, the mayor said that “it is with significant regret that I officially resign my position...effective upon receipt of this letter.”
Council President Tim Kassis, Third Ward alderman, will immediately begin serving as acting mayor. The council, at its June 11 meeting, will likely begin the process to appoint a successor to Matousek to serve until the April, 2009 election.
Matousek is resigning to accept a position as minister of operations at Sunset Presbyterian Church in Portland, Ore., calling it “an opportunity to do work I enjoy and feel gifted to do.” That he said, “is the only thing that would cause me to leave this place I love so much.”
In his four-paragraph letter, Matousek applauded the City Hall staff and people of Antigo, calling his three years as mayor “one of the highest honors of my life... “I will truly miss it!”
The mayor said he will continue to be a frequent visitor and avid cheerleader for the community.
“I’m proud of what we have accomplished over the past three years and believe that Antigo’s future is very bright,” he said,.
Matousek and his wife, Chris, came to Antigo in 1999.
He was elected Sixth ward alderman in 2004 and quickly moved through the political ranks to become mayor in April, 2005, defeating Alderman Chet Haatvedt by a 1,263 to 769 vote tally.
He easily won re-election over Alderman Dave Morse in April, 2007, with 1,186 votes to 556 for the challenger.
