The Langlade County Youth Fair is running full steam, delighting northwoods visitors and residents with a mix of serious judging, outstanding entertainment and just plain old-time fun.

But there’s more on the docket as well, including Kentuck Day in Crandon, the continuing Music in the Park series and, on Tuesday, a community picnic and dedication of the new warming house, trail and boardwalk.

A look at events, taken from the newspaper’s advertising columns, follows.

The carnival opens at noon on Sunday with wristband deals from 1 to 5 p.m.

At noon the traditional fair contests including the mini tractor pull, veggie races, frog jumping and other events are held just west of the fair office.

Kid Davie will be under the midway tent at 1:45 and 4:30 p.m. and on the midway most of the afternoon.

The big truck pulls will be held in front of the grandstand at 1:30 p.m. and the tractors come to life for the 6:30 p.m. show to cap events at the fair.

Admission for grandstand events varies.

COMMUNITY PICNIC

Fresh on the heels of the fair, the city of Antigo’s water carnival and community picnic will be held Tuesday at Peaceful Valley Park.

The events, open to all ages, are a new joint venture between the Antigo Public Library, which is sponsoring its first-ever water carnival as part of the summer reading program, and the park and recreation department.

The carnival will kick off the afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. with booths and games for youngsters and their parents.

After 3 p.m. the parks and recreation department takes over with an afternoon designed as a celebration of the improvements made to the city’s trail and park system.

There will be a ribbon-cutting at the new Spring Brook boardwalk off Second Avenue at 3:30 p.m. followed by a second ribbon-cutting immediately afterwards at the new Peaceful Valley Park warming house and restrooms.

The picnic will begin at 4 p.m. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and performance by the LYVE youth musical troupe.

The day will be capped with an outdoor showing of “The Incredibles,” courtesy of Family Video, at the Peaceful Valley Park at 9 p.m.

All proceeds will go toward park projects and maintenance. The approved park plans will be on display for review in the warming house.

The city and library are encouraging the purchase of tickets in advance at City Hall or this weekend’s farm market. The water carnival is free for participants who register in advance, with a cost of $5 per group at the door.
