Ashley Koeller, pink shirt, Heather Koeller, orange, and Magen Malueg, green, made their way through the muck and mire in an attempt to catch a pig Thursday at the fair.

Somewhat messy, pig catching is a return favorite at fairgrounds

July 30, 2010

The mud was flying at the Langlade County Fairgrounds Thursday — but it was all in good fun.

An annual favorite at the summer exposition, the pig catching contest once again attracted an excellent crowd to the grandstand seats as teams of three stepped into a ring oozing with mud.

Under the rules, the teams each had 45 seconds to put the pig in the barrel — tail first — and despite the oinkers’ squeals and protests, most made the time with little problem.

Care was taken to ensure humane treatment of all the animals and each team caught a different pig, which following the contest got a well-deserved bath.

The Pig Slayers chalked an especially fast-time in the men’s division as the Barske boys— Levi, Ashton and Mike — chased down their pig in a quick 7.3 seconds. Triple III was second at 8.35 seconds and Liver Damage, third at 12.35.

Anita Pig, sponsored by Steckbauer Farms, claimed the women’s division title. Posting a time of 10.15 seconds, Melissa Kurth, Joan Spencer and Lisa Lucht took home the trophy. Piggie Tails was second at 13.03 followed by Green Eggs and Ham at 13.24.

Ballerina-wear was a favorite for the best dressed crews — the orange and pink clad Three Hoggerinos — a team consisting of Jordan Sorano, Jacob Tatro and Caleb Schneider for the men — and for the women, the tutu-donning Prissy Piglets — Chelsea Kurth, Emily Meverden and Jessica Kurth.

A much more serious type of livestock event arrives tonight, with the 4-H and FFA market animal sale beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the dairy barn.

Forty-six market animals—a mix of steers, sheep and swine—will go through the ring with auctioneers Duke and Kathy Packard spurring bidders representing local businesses.

The reserve and grand champions will go first. Exhibitors include Isabelle Matuszewski, champion swine; Trent Pavek, reserve champion swine; Amanda Rettinger, champion beef; Nicole Solin, reserve champion beef; Abby Heistad, champion sheep; and Amy Heistad, reserve champion sheep.
