Popular pig-catching set tonight July 29, 2010 In just three years, it has become one of the youth fair’s most popular events.
Everyone from local celebrities to teams of hog-wild buddies are expected for the third annual pig catching contest tonight at 7 p.m. in front of the grandstand.
Spectator admission is $5 for adults, $3 for youth ages 12 and under and free for children three and under.
It’s fun to watch, but even more fun to try. Twenty-five teams have already entered but fair coordinator Rhonda Klement said there are still a few pigs available. Sign up by 6:30 p.m. tonight iat the south end of the grandstand.
There is even a prize for the best dressed team.
Under the rules, the teams each have 45 seconds to put the pig in the barrel, using only their arms and hands. The animal must go in tail first and each member must have one hand on the pig.
Care is taken to ensure humane treatment of the animal. The pig’s snout and tail are off limits and no abuse or roughing will be tolerated. Time will be stopped if the judge feels the pig is in harm’s way.
In 2009, top honors went to Liver Damage, with David and Ken Schedlbauer and Jordan Waldner. They corralled their swine in 10.09 seconds.
In the women’s division, Super Moms Allissa Spencer, Chelsea Kurth and Emily Meverden barreled their pig in 14.16 seconds.
