Museum building getting needed repairs July 28, 2010 The Langlade County Museum, housed in a 106-year-old structure, is getting some much-needed structural attention.
Crews from Duffek Sand and Gravel are at the venerable facility a Superior Street and Seventh Avenue this week, repairing the cracked front entrance and the first floor south portico, which has been leaking.
The work includes replacing the bottom step of the entrance, which has cracked, and sealing the entire stair area to prevent further deterioration.
In addition, crews also installed a railroad-themed donation box outside the 440 steam locomotive for visitors to use when the museum doors are closed.
Work is being funded partially by a grant from the Sheldon Foundation. More donations to maintain the museum are always needed.
The museum was constructed in 1904 as the Antigo Public Library, with funding through the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. It was reborn as the historical society museum in 1998 when a new public library was built on Clermont Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues.
