School board selects loggers to purchase timber stumpage July 28, 2010 The Antigo school board Tuesday hired local loggers for two projects in the school forest.
On unanimous votes, the board approved the high bids for timber sale stumpage in the towns of Neva and Upham. The Neva contract was awarded to Albrecht Trucking II LLC, Laona, for $12,031, but the actual work will be performed by Neva logger Don Solin.
The Upham job went to Marshall Logging Inc. of Antigo for $10,370.
Jacobs Enterprises LLC of Gleason also bid on the jobs.
In other business, the board held its preliminary review of the 2010-11 budget, a document crafted after months of reductions that reflects a drop in overall spending but an increase in local taxes.
The formal budget presentation will be made by Director of Business Services Mary Jo Filbrandt at the Aug. 24 meeting.
“If there are any requests to change anything, now is the time to do it,” Filbrandt said.
Over the past few months the board has met its target of cutting over $950,000 in proposed spending, crafting a document with a net total budget of $33.3 million, a drop of 2.26 percent.
The total general fund, not including the community service fund, dent service, food service or special education, is set at $28.6 million, a drop of .66 percent.
The district is anticipating a tax levy of $9.3 million, an increase of 3.45 percent, largely due to less dollars coming from the state and more dollars having to be raised through taxes.
“It’s a pretty straightforward budget,” Filbrandt said. “We’re not seeing that much of an increase in the tax levy.”
The mill rate is estimated at between $8.80 and $8.95 per $1,000 of equalized valuation, depending on whether property values remain unchanged or drop, as some predict. Last year’s rate was $8.31.
“These are still pretty reasonable numbers given the decrease in state aid,” Filbrandt said.
In other business, the board approved the sale of the 2009-10 construction class house to Kevin Hafner of Bryant, who submitted a bid of $47,381, above the minimum of $47,000. That is within the range of bids received for the houses over the last several years.
The board also hired Kirk’s Carpentry LLC of Antigo to construct a 24-foot addition to the Listle track storage building. The firm was low bidder for the project at $14,340.
Funds will be taken from the district’s three-year federal PEP grant, designed to improve physical education programs.
The board accepted the resignation of Mary Ament as elementary music teacher and Amy Mach as part-time housekeeper at the Middle School.
Hirings included Karen Decker as a teacher for four-year-old kindergarten at Antigo Head Start and Title I teacher at the parochial schools, and Laurie Pionek as kindergarten teacher at North Elementary School.
In other business, the board:
—named seven depositories for school district funds. They are JP Morgan Chase Bank, Banner Banks, CoVantage Credit Union, Citizens Bank, Local Government Investment Poll, M&I Marshall * Isley Bank, and PMA Financial Network Inc./Wisconsin Investment Series Cooperative.
—inked a contact with Langlade Hospital for athletic trainer services.
—designated the Antigo Daily Journal as official newspaper for publication of minutes, continuing a long-standing arrangement.
—and approved a series of policies regarding harassment and bullying.
