Charlie Wild takes feature win in IMCA modified class Friday

July 24, 2010

Antigo’s Charlie Wild had his IMCA modified racer dialed in on the Langlade County Fairgrounds Speedway’s conditions Friday night.

He started the evening with a victory in a modified heat race and then went on to capture the feature in what was a dicey event.

Wild moved up through the leaders in the feature race quickly grabbing the deal on an outside pass, but then yellow flags started flying and the leads he had established was whittled back.

Wild prevailed and he was pulling away as the race ended on a time limit yellow flag.

But there was no question that he was the true winner.

Wild was followed across the line by Eric Scribner in second and Macus Yarie in third.

It was a great night for racing at the track, and conditions seemed to be very good considering the quantity of rain that has fallen here in the past week.

On Thursday night the turn one and two corner was under water, and personnel from the stock car association spent the evening, a good share of the night and today getting the track pumped and into race-ready condition.

Those water problems prompted a surprise suspension of racing just over a week ago on an otherwise pleasant weather Friday, so there was pent-up demand from the crowd for some oval action.

They came, and they got it.

Brett Swedberg dominated in the Fastrack feature in what proved to be a fairly quiet but fast race.

A.J. Diemel was second and David Fieber crossed the line third.

After a number of yellow flags in the IMCA stock car feature, the blue time light came on and it was the point to get down to business to establish a lead.

Mitch Stankowski had the speed for that lead, taking the feature with Rod Snellenbregr, a regular winner, in second, and Barry VanStraten in third.

Travis VanStraten was the winner in the popular sports modified class trailed by Tracy Wassenberg and Matt Oreskovich.

Sean Thayer, the Birnamwood flash, continues to dominate the truck division with another feature victory.

His is a family event, and when win pictures were taken nieces, nephews and more gather around the unusually fast truck.

Gary Kasparek finished second and Casey Cox was third.

The open quads class put on another great, and very fast show to cap the night.

In the feature event Wes Ashbach was the winner followed by Travis Matuszewski in second and James Pool in third.

Racing continues Friday night as part of the Langlade County 4-H Youth Fair program.

Events start in front of the grandstand at 7 p.m.
