75 YEARS AGO TODAY

The Acting Director of the Public Works Administration reported today that Antigo is seeking just over $49,000 in aid for a project to build a vocational school. The major program is expected to cost $108,000 and the city is asking federal assistance.

The federal government has approved more than $66,000 for roadside improvements in Langlade County. The first of the projects will be the triangular piece of land at Highways 45 and 64 north of the city. Mrs. George Bemis is being credited for doing the groundwork that led to the funding and she is planning stunning flowers along the major routes.

An investigation into the costs of paying for a student to attend classes in Antigo schools is $61.76 per year, which is under the state average of $73.23. Superintendent P.A. Tipler reported the numbers at a meeting of the Antigo Rotary Club today. The average principal and teacher pay for the year was $1,158. (Things do change in 75 years.)

A woman who operates a tavern west of Post Lake with her husband, who slashed her wrist when breaking a window last week, is reported in improved condition today at the hospital. She lost considerable blood in the drunken and violent rage.

Kenneth Peters, 43, of West Allis, died this morning after the car he was driving smashed into the rear of a Langlade County Highway Department truck north of Antigo. His wife, Edna, in the front seat, was seriously injured but their children in the back of the car were not. The truck and the Peters car were both moving south on the road at about 7 a.m. when the truck was making a turn onto Highway C, and the car did not sufficiently slow.

The Thursday night youth dances at the high school drew nearly 420 young people in two groups, the younger junior and senior high students. Couples from the American Legion Post served as chaperones.

The Summit Lake baseball team turned back Vilas 8-3 Sunday and the Polar lads tipped Nine Mile 5-4 to keep the league leaders in the same position. Polar has an 8-1 record and the Summit Lake squad, 9-1.

The place to be this past weekend was at Lakewood where the community hosted a Mardis Gras celebration. The highlight was Saturday’s parade and the real showstopper was a float depicting a very large Babe the Blue Ox from Paul Bunyan fame — and the giant beast is pictured on today’s front page. Also on the parade route was the White Lake High School marching band.

There was real trouble at Neopit Friday when a 28-year old man was stabbed to death at his home. Another man has been jailed for the offense and is housed on a $50,000 cash bond. FBI officials have offered no comment on the motive.

Today’s Journal is packed with news from the local sports scene including a nod to the champs in the Langlade County girls softball tournament. The Hitching Post Rockettes won big, beating Summit Lake 24-3 in the championship game. Kerry Loy was the winning pitcher and at the bat, Cheri Galecke and Mary Galuska picked up some big hits.

The men also hit the field for the weekly county baseball league schedule and Rhinelander, Deerbrook and White Lake were the day’s winners. Cliff Bastle picked up the win for the Brookies and at White Lake, George Maule went 4-for-4 at bat including two home runs.

On the men’s baseball scene, Ourada’s Hi-Way Motel scored five straight victories en route to win the 12 team slowpitch softball tourament at Antigo’s Athletic Park Sunday. In the title game, Bill Greening, Jim Wegter, Don Andres and Mike Blahnik each belted a pair of hits in the team’s 6-0 victory over Double Bogey of Wausau.
