School board to take preliminary action on budget Tuesday evening July 26, 2010 The Antigo school board plans preliminary action on the 2010-11 budget, a document crafted after months of reductions that reflects a drop in overall spending but an increase in local taxes.
The board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the high school library to review the document. Final approval will come after publication in August.
Over the past few months the board has met its target of cutting over $950,000 in proposed spending, crafting a document with a net total budget of $33.3 million, a drop of 2.26 percent.
The total general fund, not including the community service fund, dent service, food service or special education, is set at $28.6 million, a drop of .66 percent.
The district is anticipating a tax levy of $9.3 million, an increase of 3.45 percent, largely due to less dollars coming from the state and more dollars having to be raised through taxes.
The mill rate is estimated at between $8.80 and $8.95 per $1,000 of equalized valuation, depending on whether property values remain unchanged or drop, as some predict. Last year’s rate was $8.31.
In other business, the board is expected to act on the sale of the 2009-10 construction class house. Kevin Hafner of Bryant submitted a bid of $47,381, above the minimum of $47,000. That is within the range of bids received for the houses over the last several years.
In another fiscal matter, the board is expected to approve bids for timber sale stumpage in the towns of Neva and Upham. Albrecht Trucking II LLC, Laona and Marshall Logging Inc., Antigo, were the high bidders.
The board will also accept bids to construct an addition to the Listle track storage building. Low bidder at Kirk’s Carpentry LLC of Antigo.
Personnel matters include approving the resignation of Mary Ament as elementary music teacher. Administration is recommending the position be refilled.
Hirings include Karen Decker as a teacher for four-year-old kindergarten at Antigo Head Start and Title I teacher at the parochial schools, and Laurie Pionek as kindergarten teacher at North Elementary School.
The board will also:
—named seven depositories for school district funds.
—ink a contact with Langlade Hospital for athletic trainer services.
—designate the Antigo Daily Journal as official newspaper for publication of minutes.
—and approve a series of policies regarding harassment and bullying.
The meeting will conclude with a review of the annual board and district administrator’s evaluation.
