Huge crowd for sausages, spuds, music

July 20, 2010

Despite weather that threatened during the day on Tuesday, there was a massive crowd on hand for the appearance by Monroe Crossing, a Minnesota orchestra that centers its selections on bluegrass music and fun, at City Park Monday evening.

“This has been a great night,” Nick Salm, who helps guide the park music program, said as he checked the happy crowd.

The music in the park series has been picking up steam for a few years and the Monday night crowd had to be one of the biggest.

The Bone and Joint Clinic, with facilities in a number of central Wisconsin communities, donated funds to hire Monroe Crossing, Salm Partners came to Antigo with cases and cases of sausages from their Denmark plant, and the Dixie Lunch, Culver’s of Antigo, Farmers Home and North Star’s banquet kitchen all donated to the feast.

About the time the eating was done, the five members of Monroe Crossing took the stage.

They explained they were on their way home to Minnesota from a weekend gig in Door County, and were delighted to make the stop in Antigo.

“The next time we come here, we are bringing recording equipment,” members of the band said, suggesting that the enthusiasm and the participation by the crowd were inspiring.

While bluegrass was the main fare, the band had the ability to do a little mixing and matching.

There were gospel numbers, a crossing with country and western and even some more modern rock tunes — with emphasis on the bass, fiddle and banjo.

The crowd cheered as the band played a version of “Dueling Banjos,” but it was a case of a dueling banjo and mandolin.

Members of the band and many in the crowd said they were looking toward to 2011.
