Antigo man cited for reckless endangerment

June 22, 2010

An Antigo man has been charged with a felony count of second degree reckless endangerment of safety on allegations he intentionally tried to run a woman off the road.

Jamie L. Koszarek, 24, of 722 Third Ave. was ordered held in the local lockup on a $1,000 cash bond during an appearance Monday in Langlade County Circuit Court.

He also faces a charge of resisting arrest as the result of Sunday’s incident.

According to court documents, Koszarek allegedly followed a vehicle operated by his estranged wife at a dangerously close distance, passed her at a high rate of speed and then slammed on his brakes, forcing her to swerve to avoid a collision. At one point, she attempted to pass him and he forced her onto the shoulder of the oncoming lane. The victim was on the telephone line with the sheriff’s department as the incident played out. She advised that she didn’t want to stop as she believed Koszarek would be further angered by a male friend who was in her company.

Koszarek was arrested at his home later that day. According to police, his less than cooperative behavior sparked issuance of the resisting arrest count.

Officials said the incident occurred days after the two had been ordered by the court to have no contact. A preliminary hearing has been set for next week.

Manuel D. Niaves, 33, of W8955 Norwood Drive was released on a $1,000 signature bond for a misdemeanor count of battery. He is accused of throwing punches at a man during a weekend dispute at a town of Antigo home. His case is scheduled to return to court in July.

Bonnie Crandall, 47, of 156 Fred St. entered a not guilty plea to a third offense of driving while intoxicated. She was arrested for the offense on Sunday as the result of a traffic stop in the city’s downtown.

If convicted, she risks being sentenced to a jail term ranging between 30 days and one year and fines of $600 to $2,000. The case is scheduled to return to court in August.

Also entering pleas of not guilty were Adam J. Marten, 20, Antigo, to theft of a bicycle; Nicholas Volpi, 28, 710 Lincoln St., to theft involving a computer stolen from Peeps Pawn Shop; and Rachel J. Minard, 17, to retail theft at Walmart.
